Attendance FAQ

What is the role of the Attendance Coordinators?

The Attendance Coordinators, Aaron Brown and Brian Marrow, manage the district's attendance and truancy efforts through the Educational Supports for Attendance (ESAs). They supervise all truancy court proceedings and monitor excessive absenteeism across various school buildings. Weekly, they facilitate attendance team meetings to track students at risk of truancy and excessive absences. The Attendance team collaborates with families, providing essential information to help support student attendance.

Who are the Educational Supports for Attendance (ESAs) and what do they do?

The ESAs are the attendance clerks at each school.  They are the ones who ensure that student attendance is entered correctly each school day.  They track student absences and issue attendance letters based.  ESAs document reasons for student’s absences.  They make phone calls to homes to get reasons and/or verification for absences.  They issue tardy slips when needed.

Mahoning County Juvenile Court Warning System

Under a new program, Magistrate Gina DeGenova will travel to partnering Districts to conduct hearings beginning in the 25-26 school year. These on-site hearings will occur if a student accumulates more than forty-five (45) hours of unexcused absences by December. A student who accumulates more than seventy-two (72) hours of unexcused absences will be scheduled for an EWS hearing at Juvenile Court. Parents/Guardians will be required to attend all meetings. Formal charges may be filed if attendance does not improve. Read the letter to families here.

How is attendance different due to Ohio House Bill 410?

The most significant difference for attendance since Ohio House Bill 410 is the change from days of absence to hours of absence.  Previously, absences were marked according to half days and full days.  Now, all attendance is tracked based on the number of hours scholars are in school.

What is an Attendance Intervention Assessment?

This assessment is used to collect relevant information around student absences and any barriers that exist in coming to school.  This document is used by the attendance team to create possible interventions for the student.

What is a Monitoring Letter?

This is the letter sent to families to notify them of the changes in the attendance policy and to let them know the procedures.  It is sent when the student reaches 16-18 hours of absence.

What is a Full Notice Letter?

This is a notice to the student and family that the student has crossed the threshold and has become truant or excessively absent according to Ohio House Bill 410.  At this point, the student needs to attend school on a regular basis and should show improvement in their attendance.  Failure to do so may result in further actions pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 3321.
